Parking plan to boost town

Tuesday 13th April 2010, 11:00AM BST.

Short term parking could be reintroduced to Oswestry’s Bailey Head in a bid to regenerate the town centre.

Oswestry Town Council is calling for a “common sense” approach to the reintroduction of the 22 spaces on Bailey Head on non-market days.

Town clerk David Preston said the move would also remove confusion once and for all about whether parking is allowed on the prime town centre spot.

He said the council would ask Shropshire Council leader Keith Barrow, a former Oswestry town and borough councillor, for his support.

Mr Preston said: “In looking at its plans for the markets and regeneration of the town, the council has agreed to approach the new Shropshire Council looking for the reintroduction of short stay car parking on the Bailey Head on non-market days to assist with local regeneration and tourism.

“Members have long considered that the removal of the 22 spaces was a retrograde step and since then difficulties have resulted and much confusion as to whether parking and unloading is permitted.”

Town mayor Margaret Chamberlain said: “The town council would like to extend its traffic management at the Horsemarket car park to include the Bailey Head.”

Confusion on whether parking is permitted on the Bailey Head came to a head at Christmas when a handful of people were wrongly booked for parking there during December.
