Letter: Dining idea is a joke. Isn’t it?
Tuesday 13th April 2010, 8:02AM BST.
Letter: Reading your article on the “Australian style al-fresco dining centre” for Shrewsbury made me chuckle – then I suddenly realised it wasn’t an April Fool.
Firstly, Shrewsbury cannot be compared to Melbourne by any stretch of the imagination.
Secondly, other towns and cities in England that are successful in this respect have excellent pedestrianised areas, whereas Shrewsbury has none.
Thirdly, Shrewsbury is always choked with traffic.
Do the advocates of this scheme really think more people, especially families, would rush to dine outside in this environment (which is not even conducive to a pleasant shopping experience), or are they attempting to increase trade by attracting smokers?
I agree with this concept in principle, but it’s not compatible with Shrewsbury.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: prevent all traffic except emergency vehicles (and delivery vehicles) from the town centre loop. Then you’d have a lovely pedestrianised centre for such an environment. It’ll never happen though. Shrewsbury is a backward town for backward people.

Exactly as above ban all bus, taxis, cars etc from entering the town. The excuse think of the disabled is a myth many i see catching the bus/taxi look as though they could walk to a pick up point outside the town centre etc.

No pedestrian areas in Shrewsbury? What about Pride Hill, The Square and Butcher Street?
On frequent trips to Shrewsbury I often think how easy it is to cross the town in a car.
Looking at all the residential building (with garages and parking) going on in the loop,it looks like the planners don’t agree with you.
I think Peasbody’s right about one thing – you’re never going to get rid of them!

Attracting smokers, there’s a novel idea…….

i like the idea but its always cold in the UK, for me it should be demountable outdoor seating from june, july, aug and then as is for the rest of the year, we need more trees in the town centre to provide shelter from the rain perhaps and i agree more pedestrianisation please

Firstly get rid of the Weatherspoons pubs or at least get rid of one of them.
Al fresco dining is not an option in these pubs at all. Basically pubs like this ruin towns like this and are nothing but a nuisance.

#3 The excuse think of the disabled is a myth
…and if it isn’t a myth just think of the free entertainment of watching people having heart attacks or crawling to their cars. Bound to be an increasing variety of hilariousness with an aging population.
Sounds kind of traditional in a way too now we don’t have circus freak shows! :)
Back to mediaeval Shrewbury I say !!!!

I don’t think ANY town or city in the UK is suitable for al-fresco dining places on the streets. For gawds sake this is the UK and we have an unpredictable climate!

Before we ban traffic I would ban Harold from Shrewsbury Town Centre :-) he must be from Telford

“Shrewsbury is always choked with traffic”…get real. Our major urban centres are “always choked” but this is a moderately sized town with some rush hour problems and slightly busy during parts of the weekend. I suspect this is yet more NIMBY mentality as expressed by some town centre residents. I’m sure that not so long ago similar objections were raised about pedestrianising streets, creating car parks, closing down car parks, introducing parking restrictions…in fact anything to do with cars. Do no Shrewsbury residents travel to major cities? That must be the case because they don’t know how lucky they are when it comes to the issue of traffic.

It sounds to me that most of you are afraid of change!! So what if it attracts smokers, they have money!!! This town needs money, and open minded people not a bunch of nah sayers. It would be fantastic to reduce the traffic through town, if anyone has an actual inteligent suggestion speak up!! The Quarry is a wonder venue that isn’t used to it’s full potential. Any thoughts?

Forget the cold, use patio heaters and canopies and you can stay out in all weathers.
Other towns have great venues which offer Al Fresco dining all year round, a very popular Australian bar in Worcester springs to mind.
Shrewsbury town centre needs livening up, I agree that a lot more use could be made of the Quarry, but it will never be any use if the noise police have their way

“Firstly get rid of the Weatherspoons pubs”
Why? There are several other pubs in Shrewsbury I’d like to see go. Those offering a wonderful menu, yet serve up cardboard burgers and burnt chips, advertise real ales and either never stock them or keep them badly. Those who think a good cleaning is to wave a grubby cloth over the bar.
