Work starts to make road safer

Monday 12th April 2010, 12:35PM BST.

Ben Somers Work started today on a £1.4 million improvement scheme to make a Shrewsbury road safer.

The programme at Harlescott crossroads will run until August 27. Council transport officials have previously unveiled plans for the new measures on the road where 14-year-old Ben Somers lost his life in October 2008.

The work will include resurfacing, improvements to the left slip road, from Whitchurch Road to Harlescott Lane, and improved pedestrian facilities including a new crossing.

Jason Hughes, Shropshire Council’s principal traffic engineer, said: “The works, expected to take around 20 weeks to complete, will include modifying the road layout at the junction and installing a new traffic signal system. This will make it safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, and reduce queuing and delays.

“We hope that people will understand that these works are essential.”
