Titans frustrated by call-off ‘farce’
Saturday 10th April 2010, 11:30AM BST.
Telford Titans coach Dave Fielder has labelled the ENL 1 play-offs as a “farce” after it emerged that tomorrow’s trip to Nottingham Lions has been cancelled.
The two sides were due to meet just seven days after a heated encounter in Telford, when the home team were handed over 100 minutes in penalties.
League officials could yet look into the officiating at that match, after learning that the visiting team spent just 12 minutes in the sin bin.
But Fielder, whose side take on Coventry Blaze this afternoon (3.30pm), is concerned about the state of the play-off system after learning that other games may have been cancelled.
He said: “It has been a bit of a farce in both groupings. It will not even be a proper final, as the game at Coventry is an under-18 final.
“It will be just a couple of home and away games for the final. We have got a couple of games next month, but the season is just dragging on now.
“At first Nottingham said they couldn’t get ice time, and then said they have got six players in hospital, but they have got a lot of spare players.”
The points from tomorrow’s game are likely to be awarded as a draw by the league, although Nottingham will still progress to the play-off final after winning all their games so far.
Jan Lachowicz, Nottingham Lions manager, said tomorrow’s match — which would have had no bearing on the final play-off positions — had been cancelled to make way for a junior game and no other date could be arranged
He said: “Nottingham (Arena) had a backlog of fixtures, and rescheduled matches that didn’t look like they would be played.
“We have got some injuries, but that is not really relevant.”
Today’s match at the ice rink will not be Telford Titans’ last of the season, with ENL Cup games against Sheffield and Solihull still to be played over coming weeks.
