Wolves have vowed to put quality over quantity regarding new signings this summer if they remain in the Premier League this season.

In a bold message to supporters, chief executive Jez Moxey has outlined plans to invest in fewer but better players this summer providing, as expected, the club wins its survival battle.

They take on Stoke at Molineux on Sunday lunchtime hoping to pick up three more points to edge towards safety.

Manager Mick McCarthy has spent around £18m on 11 players since promotion, including four loans.

But only three permanent signings – £6.5m club-record capture Kevin Doyle, free transfer goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann and belatedly £2m Ronald Zubar – could be noted to have made a really significant contribution.

Nenad Milijas at £2.6m has sparkled in fits and bursts, while on-loan pair Michael Mancienne and Adlene Guedioura have become regulars.

But £2m Greg Halford, £1.8m Stefan Maierhofer, £1.2m AndrewSurman along with other temporary captures such as Geoffrey Mujangi Bia and Segundo Castillo have had little chance to impress.

Moxey was expected to have delayed such an announcement until the end of the season but, with a clear strategy in place on where the club is heading, is happy to reveal the slight shift in policy.

He said: “If, and it’s still a big ‘if’ we’re fortunate enough to stay in the Premier League this time around, I don’t think we’ll be looking to bring in so many players, but we’ll try to raise the quality and bring in a lesser number.

“That would be the plan if we’re able to stay in the Premier League.”

Moxey now admits some signings have not worked out. He said: “While you have to invest in your team – and we did – we knew some players we bought may not work, and we knew some would. Some have and some haven’t.

“We knew some existing players would really step up, some haven’t been able to do it as well as we would have liked.

“It’s disappointing Sylvan Ebanks-Blake has only scored one goal.”
