Plan for new hotel in town revamp

Friday 9th April 2010, 10:35AM BST.

A new hotel, a bus depot and dozens of shops could be built in Welshpool over the next few years as part of a multi-million pound plan to re-develop the town.

Welshpool Town Council has been working on the plan for the last few years to coincide with a major shopping development at the town’s former livestock market.

Councillor Alan Crowe, of Welshpool, said proposals show a new hotel, and other commercial premises in Mill Lane and more shops on Church Street car park.

They also show a new bus depot on land behind the town’s vicarage.

He said: “This scheme has already seen the town’s livestock market in Mill Lane move to the outskirts of the town to allow for a new Tesco supermarket and almost 4,000sq ft of non-food stores to be built in its place.

“Work is due to start on Tesco very shortly and will also include a new one-way system in the town. But there are also other proposals in place to develop the town even more.”

He said the proposals for the new hotel, bus depot and more shops were still in the very early stages.

Councillor Crowe added that the scheme, if given the go-ahead, would help create hundreds of jobs in the town. He said: “These are exciting times for Welshpool and a lot of money is being spent in the town.”
