Man, 81, hurt in bus attack

Thursday 8th April 2010, 11:05AM BST.

Generic police tapeAn 81-year-old man was left with blood pouring from his head after a brick was hurled through the window of a bus in Telford.

The attack was one of two on Arriva Midlands buses in the town yesterday afternoon. The man was travelling with his wife on one of the buses along Dale Acre Way, in Hollinswood.

The missile smashed straight through a side window and hit the pensioner on the side of the head.

Minutes before, the windscreen of another bus travelling along the same road was shattered by a brick causing £3,000 of damage.

No-one was injured in that incident.

Following the attacks, police immediately flooded the area with officers and today issued an urgent appeal for witnesses to catch those responsible.

The man was taken by ambulance to Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital but was released last night and is now recovering at home.

Today police spokesman Chris Ammonds said it could have turned out much worse.

He said: “We are very keen to find the people responsible for this attack, and when we do they can expect to be dealt with in a very robust manner.

“While we suspect there was no intent to harm, the act in itself was reckless and an 81-year-old man was injured.

“From the amount of blood that was pouring from his head we initially thought we were dealing with a very serious matter, and it is only through luck that it turned out not to be so.”

A female passenger sitting behind the pensioner also suffered minor cuts and grazes from the glass shattering.

Mr Ammonds said witnesses had reported youths hanging around in the area yesterday afternoon and said police were keen to speak to anyone who saw or heard anything about the attacks.

Arriva Midlands spokeswoman Suzanne Gee said the company was aware of the incidents.

“The police are investigating and we are waiting to hear more information,” she added.

Anyone with information is urged to call Telford police on 0300 333 3000 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

In regards to the newspaper article entitled Man 81, hurt in bus attack… i was on a bus yesturday travelling from Hollinswood Telford, to Woodside, when a gang of young youths threw small stones at the bus window. this too happened on Hollinswood. It didnt damage the windows, but it shook me up. it is a stupid prank that these youths do, they dont think of other people, or what accident it may cause. i hope those involved who caused the injury of that 81 year old man get caught and punished. they should also pay for any damage.

I understand that there were plenty of witnesses but there appears to be no description of the individuals? Surely the individuals could be identified much easier with a description? Why would this information be witheld? Political Correctness gone once again?

I have experienced this in Manchester. I saw it almost in slow motion – the lads arms hurling a brick and it coming through the window next to me. Nobody hurt luckily, but it is more frightening than you’d imagine. Useless parents are almost always to blame for these little half wits.

My grandad was the 81 year old who got injured and this has just confirmed what a scummy place telford really is, I hope whoever did this actually gets caught and they get what they deserve!! If it had of been a child next to the window where the brick was thrown they could have been killed!

School holidays and children running wild again. Parents too busy to know where they are or just don’t care as long as they are not being bothered.
Hope the injured gentleman is ok.

A London Midland train had a window broken over the Easter break between Wellington and Oakengates. Parents be aware of what your child is doing please.

This is unacceptable.I live in hollinswood and I’m sick of the crime spree happening round here and the police not doing anything about it
Everyday I see these thugs hanging around the street causing trouble, smoking cannabis, robbing people and selling drugs and I have to know my children are growing up around it
The question is why isn’t nobody doing anything about it ?
