Bowlers make treble history
Thursday 8th April 2010, 10:41AM BST.
Shropshire’s short mat bowlers are celebrating an historic terrific treble of national titles.
The team of Sandra Barker, Margaret Price, Chris Shakeshaft and Chris Williams won the Mixed Fours National Championship for the third year in a row.
They followed their victory in 2008 and 2009 by hoisting aloft the trophy at the Kempston Indoor Bowling Centre in Bedfordshire.
“It’s a great achievement because no team have ever won three national championship finals in a row before in any format,” said manager Mike Shakeshaft.
Shropshire went through the entire tournament, which attracted 32 counties from across the country, without losing.
They cruised through the round-robin stage before taking the knockout stages in their stride, clinching the title with a final victory over Hampshire.
And Shropshire have more chances of national glory this weekend with Shakeshaft and Williams part of a strong travelling party returning to Bedford for the national finals of the singles, pairs, triples and fours.
