Owner of dogs quizzed by police
Wednesday 7th April 2010, 11:15AM BST.
The owner of two dogs is being questioned by police after more than 20 lambs and ewes were mauled to death on neighbouring farms in Shropshire.
Two attacks happened on farms near Bridgnorth at the weekend and a third incident was reported to police yesterday after the two dogs were spotted worrying a flock on one of the farms.
The attacks happened at farms in Chelmarsh and Billingsley between Sunday evening and Monday.
The attacks left four ewes and one lamb dead in Chelmarsh and more than 20 sheep were killed in Billingsley.
The chocolate brown dogs, thought to be labrador or bull terrier crosses, were seen roaming in nearby Covert Lane on Sunday evening.
Police today said they were speaking to the owner of two dogs and he was assisting with the investigation into the attacks.
No-one has been charged.
Maria Hawkaluk, spokeswoman for West Mercia Police, said: “Following a third incident yesterday at one of the farms involved, the two dogs responsible have been identified.
“Their owner has been traced by police and is co-operating fully with officers investigating the incidents.”
Police have also renewed calls for dog owners to be responsible and ensure their pets are not allowed into any fields containing livestock.
“Even the most loving family pet can turn into a savage and merciless killer when away from its owner’s control,” she added.
