With the political big guns now out on the campaign trail, it will be all smiles as they go face to face with the public to garner votes.

Have you ever met a major politician as they did a meet and greet?

Was it all jollity for the cameras or did they seem interested in your views?

My mother in law once served Dennis Healey with some fruit and veg as he toured Walsall market for the cameras. She was even filmed looking very nervous for the local news. She found it all very odd as he didn’t seem like the sort of person who did their own shopping very often.

I met the late Dr Mo Mowlem in the foyer of Birmingham Town Hall prior to a rally against the pit closures back in the early 1990s. I didn’t know who she was at the time but had a fascinating chat with her. A few minutes later I discovered that she was the main speaker at the rally.

She came over as a very funny, pleasant and genuine person, which seems to have been borne out by everything I’ve heard about her since.

Went to Rio De Janiero with Sir Geoffrey Howe for a morning when he was Foreign Secretary. Was given a great wad of the local currency in expenses, tipped the maid who took my suit away to be pressed a few hundred Cruezeros and later realized I’d given her about 2p! Never had the chance to spend it and couldn’t bring it back to convert it. Have always since wished that I had given her the lot.

I was a student at Oxford in the 90s. My mate persuaded me to come and hear John Prescott speak at Ruskin College one lunchtime. We had a few pints first so when we got to the college I needed the loo. Walked into the toilet and stood at the urinal next to – yes – Mr Prescott. He looked over and said ‘Alright’. Then went on to give a very good speech. I’ve been a fan ever since.
