Busy day for crews rescuing animals

Wednesday 7th April 2010, 11:53AM BST.

Animals had to be rescued by the fire service after a number of incidents in Shropshire.

A swan had to be rescued from the River Severn near to Monkmoor Road at 1pm yesterday.

A spokeswoman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said they were asked by the RSPCA to help rescue the cygnet which had a broken wing. However, due to its injury it had to be put down.

Hours later firefighters were again called on as they launched a two-hour rescue operation after a pet dog disappeared down a rabbit hole near Shrewsbury at 7.15pm yesterday and failed to reappear on fields off Ellesmere Road.

The fire crew began digging and used a specialist camera to locate it.

And a cat got stuck after falling between two buildings near Newport.

A family called in the fire brigade after they found their pet stuck between a shed and a portable building in the garden of their house in Pave Lane, Chetwynd Aston, yesterday.
