Work to replace bridge starting

Monday 5th April 2010, 10:10AM BST.

Work will start in June to replace a footbridge severely damaged in an accident in Shrewsbury, council officials have said.

Designs have been drawn up for the new bridge for Hazeldine Way after the previous one was badly damaged last year.

Ron Buzzacott, Shropshire Council’s traffic manager, said the work would take nearly two weeks to complete.

He said: “Work to replace the footbridge will start on June 1 and the works will carry on until Sunday, June 13. It will be done under temporary traffic signals.”

The footbridge was struck by a digger on the back of a lorry on October 21 with highways officials claiming it was sheer luck that it did not collapse.

It was initially hoped the bridge would reopen earlier this year.Repair work to the structure is expected to cost at least £100,000 with the council seeking to recoup the money from the insurers.
