Plans to slash speed limit on Shrewsbury routes
Saturday 3rd April 2010, 12:29PM BST.
Major routes across Shrewsbury could see their speed limits slashed shortly after proposals moved a step closer to becoming a reality.
Shropshire Council wants to cut the speed limit to 50mph on the A5112 Robertson Way and to 30mph at three roundabouts along the route. The road currently has a 60mph limit.
And the authority also wants to reduce the limits to 30mph for the entire lengths of Battlefield Road, Whitchurch Road, Sundorne Road and Featherbed Lane.
Speed limits on sections of the roads are currently 40mph.
Hereford Road and Telford Way would remain at 40mph and Haycock Way will also be included in proposals for a 50mph limit under the plans.
And the reductions look set to go ahead with just one objection lodged with Shirehall chiefs over the A5112 plans from a resident who wants it to be cut to 40mph because they claim it is unsafe for pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.
They also claim that the speed limit is inconsistent along the route.
But officers are recommending that the plans be approved for a 50mph limit, despite the objection, when the council’s central planning committee meets to discuss the proposals on Thursday.
In a report to the committee Hugh Dannatt, Shropshire Council’s group manager for highway and traffic engineering, said: “The average speeds travelled on Robertson Way were recorded as 46.2mph northbound and 43.8mph southbound indicating that the route is both currently perceived to be, and is travelled at, speeds suited to a 50mph speed limit.”

30mph? Chance would be a fine thing. There seems to be no desire to get traffic moving around Shrewsbury in a safe and efficient manner.
Next thing there will be yet more complaints about traffic being at a standstill.
Clear the roadside “furniture” to make it safer and less distracting, sort out the potholes, enforce the law so antisocial motorists dont park half on the pavement to the detriment of road users AND pedestrians and get the traffic moving.
Hey presto, less emmisions, less congestion.

“They also claim that the speed limit is inconsistent along the route.”
Watch out for this one. Telford used this excuse to reduce virtually all there 60MPH link roads to 40MPH as “it was less confusing to the motorist if all the speed limits are the same”..the result is crazy low limits all over the place, which no one sticks to and even now the mean recorded speeds are in excess of 40MPH…total waste of money and more motorist inconvenience.

All the proposed changes to the current speed limits on the roads mentioned in this article make good sense to me.
I feel that they are set at very sensible levels.
Also I am sure the public will agree it makes towards positive safety for all who use these routes.

I really can’t se why 30MPH is needed along Featherbed lane and Sundorne road. The 40MPH limit has served sucessfully for many years, with lower than average accident rates, so why they “need” reducing now is beyond me, apart from a congestion making factor.

With regard to the proposed reduction on the A5112, the European Road Assessment Programme classifies this road as nothing more than “low-medium” risk for serious / fatal accidents on said road. Risk = Fatal and serious accidents / billion veh km travelled.
So I can’t see the problem with the existing speed limit personally.
