Public toilet to get drug syringe bins
Friday 2nd April 2010, 1:12PM BST.

Special bins to enable drugs users to dispose of needles safely will be installed at a Shrewsbury toilet block which has had to be closed amid health and safety fears.
Needles have been left in toilet roll holders at the block of toilets near Shrewsbury’s weir in Castlefields sparking the closure and concerns about how the problem can be solved.
Now Alan Mosley, a Shropshire councillor for the area, said new toilet roll holders and bins are to be installed to ensure needles are disposed of safely – and police patrols will be stepped up to try to target drug users and clamp down on the problem.
He said: “Drugs users are leaving needles around and the toilets have been closed for some time by the town council because of users, on health and safety grounds. This is an issue which blights parts of the town.
“We were told at a meeting of the Castlefields and Ditherington Community Partnership on Wednesday that new toilet roll holders and a container where people can actually put needles would be put in and these toilets could then be reopened as soon as possible
“Sadly if people are using the toilets for this purpose then at least they can dispose of the needles safely so as to not cause an issue for other users.”
He added: “Once the new equipment is there they will be reopened and that is likely to be a few days.
“Police have also said they will increase surveillance in the area to deter people from using the toilets.”
Meanwhile, Councillor Mosley said an improved CCTV camera could finally be installed in Spring Gardens in Ditherington.

Is this plan a joke by the council?. They can’t be serious if they think junkies are suddenly going to become concerned about how they dispose of their used needles. There must be plenty of litter bins in the town where they could put them, still a danger I know, but they choose not to use them, why would they bother to use the bins being provided for their use?. The fact that they inject themselves with this junk in the first place is a sure sign that they care nothing for their own health so I don’t think they will be too concerned about other peoples. Maybe they even leave their needles in toilet roll holders with the aim of injuring someone, let’s face it, they are not normal people. Perhaps more effort should be put into policing to stamp out the problem.

If this was a story about a toilet block in Telford, this section would now be full of comments from Shrewsbury residents about this being par for the course in Telford.

Close the toilet or get a pcso to stand outside it while it is open.

this shows that shrewsbury is a broken society, full of failure and dole claiming lay abouts, the whole place has been ruined by Gordon Brown being soft on crime and cowtowing down to unions and health and safety advisors who wont let the road sweepers pick up needles any more, we need to privatise the toilets and lock up the junkies, that will sort it, and this will only happen if we get a new government
