Pair lucky to be alive after fire

Friday 2nd April 2010, 10:14AM BST.

Firefighters said two people were lucky to be alive after they had to flee for their lives when a blaze swept through their Shropshire home today.

The pair had to climb through a bedroom window and get on to the roof of an extension to escape the fire because the flames had blocked off the exit to their front door.

Fire investigation officers and police are looking into the cause of the fire, which happened at a detached property at Maesbrook, near Oswestry, at 2.45am today.

Two fire crews from Oswestry and the incident commander from Shrewsbury were called to the scene.

Oswestry Fire Station watch manager John Davies said the incident could easily have ended in tragedy.

He said: “The owners had to escape the fire and they suffered smoke inhalation and bruising.

“They had to escape through a window because that was the only way they could get out. Their escape route had been cut off.

“They went out a window and got on to a lean-to type building, which I think was a kitchen extension.

“They got on to that roof and then got from there on to the floor.”

He added: “The fire was confined to the ground floor. Doors were closed so the fire did not go any further. They were very lucky that they managed to get out.”
