Extra camping days in doubt

Thursday 1st April 2010, 11:35AM BST.

Plans to allow extra camping and caravanning at a north Shropshire motorsport venue close to race days look set to be turned down following a string of objections from residents.

Salop Motor Club wants permission for extra camping and caravanning days before and after major events at Hawkstone Scramble Track, Weston under Redcastle.

The venue got planning permission in March 2007 to use the 19-acre site for camping and caravanning on the day before and after motorbike events are held at the scramble track.

But bosses want to extend the permission to allow people to stay on site for five days before and two days after race day.

Their proposal also seeks permission for provision of temporary toilets within the camping area when the venue hosts one of its eight annual competitions, which regularly attract thousands of people.

Applicants say they anticipate the extra days would allow officials and stewards to remain on site before and after race days.

In a report to councillors, planners at Shropshire Council have recommended the bid be refused after nine residents and the parish council voiced concerns.

The council is due to consider the plans on Tuesday when the north planning committee meets in Wem.
