Man freed from vehicle after crash

Thursday 1st April 2010, 11:36AM BST.

A man had to be cut free from the cab of a milk tanker after it collided with a truck on the A5 near Shrewsbury early today.

The crash happened as the truck was parked in a layby while the driver was asleep on a stretch of the main road near Upper Edgebold just after 12.30am.

Firefighters had to cut a 48-year-old man free from the tanker.

Murray MacGregor, a spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said the man was immobilised using a neck collar and spinal board and was complaining of shoulder and upper chest injuries.

The man was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, but his condition is not believed to be life-threatening.

Meanwhile, a police officer was injured in a collision with a car while riding a motorbike at Emstrey Bank on the A5 just after 11.45am yesterday. Mr MacGregor said the motorcyclist suffered bumps and bruises and was taken to the RSH.

Police today confirmed the motorcyclist was a police officer from a force outside of West Mercia. It is not clear if he was on duty at the time or not.

And motorists faced rush-hour delays on a stretch of the road between the Preston and Emstrey islands following a collision involving three vehicles at about 5.20pm yesterday.
Nobody was injured.
