Last-ditch bid to save community skip service

Tuesday 30th March 2010, 11:56AM BST.

A last-ditch attempt is being made to save Shropshire’s community skips from the axe. Shirehall leaders are due to make a decision tomorrow.

The Shropshire Council cabinet is recommended to scrap the service, which operates in the former south and north districts of the county.

The move will save the authority £47,000 a year but Lib Dem opposition councillors are hoping to persuade the cabinet not to go ahead with the plan, which they warn will mean people having to travel longer distances to get rid of their waste.

They also fear there will be more countryside fly-tipping if the service ends.

Peter Phillips, Lib Dem group deputy leader, said today: “This mobile skip service is highly valued by residents in rural Shropshire as it provides the only means by which many communities can easily dispose of bulky items.

“The amount to be saved from this measure would be small and the increase in the carbon footprint massive, as residents have to journey significant distances, to Sh- rewsbury or Craven Arms, to dispose of bulk items.

“The council has also ign- ored the likelihood of incre- ased fly-tipping by the less scrupulous. Indeed Powys has recently adopted a similar scheme to the community skips to successfully combat this nuisance.”

Shirehall watchdogs have voted in favour of ending the service.

A report to cabinet says the council has provided recycling centres in each of the five former districts.

It says waste contractor Veolia is concerned that at busy times at the community skip sites, there are he- alth and safety risks and little can be done to prevent illegal disposal of trade and industrial waste.

The Lib Dems have called for the community skips service to be extended.

This wise and far-sighted move should ensure that every Shropshire lay-by becomes a rat infested eyesore. 47K – price of a decent car and a fraction of what it will cost to clear the fly-tipping up. Pathetic and depressing in equal measure. R.I.P ‘Keep Britain Tidy’.

waste collection and disposal should be free at the point of use, its a front line public service, not to be cut, i am against fortnighly collections and against this reduction in service too which is why i will vote for david cameron who has promised to bring back weekly bin day for all, no more labour cuts, no more smelly bins

I hope that this move will permit the council to carry on paying the wages of some pointless, pensioned position.
    Poetry Outreach Councillor anyone?
By the way, by what stretch of the imagination or Byzantine interpretation of Local Government law, are they permitted to appoint “Council Cabinets” – surely the best-named, anti-democratic development since Stalin.

One news article regarding the fear of fly tipping over the easter weekend and one regarding not supplying community skips. Now either i have lost the plot or the local councillors have not grasped the art of communication.

A saving of £47K is fantastic news. More savings like this please.

Can we also heavily fine anyone dropping litter. £500 a time should help to tidy the place up and raise more much needed revenue. I expect the only people that would complain about this are the litter droppers!

Andy g, that stuff you move around in all the time and looks quite nice sometimes, especially the green bits when you look at it is called your ‘environment’. When your ‘environment’ goes bad because of what other people are doing to it you can get very unhappy or even sometimes sick. It’s more important to you than you think. Really.
