It would be the most remarkable of efforts, but AFC Telford United could still yet make the Blue Square North play offs, writes Telford blogger Alex James.

Saturday’s 4-0 win over Hyde United was so dominant it was almost too easy, and it left the bumper crowd at the New Bucks Head wondering why the side couldn’t play like that more often.

More performances like that would see the Bucks certainly in the play off positions and probably pushing for automatic promotion.

But the consistency hasn’t been there all year – Saturday’s result was Telford’s first victory in six games.

The fact that it was achieved at a canter will have left fans delighted and frustrated in almost equal measure.

The Easter holiday double header has to yield six more points if the late charge for the play-offs is to be gain enough momentum to be taken seriously.

Telford assistant manager Larry Chambers was in realistic mood after the Hyde game claiming that the Bucks still have a ‘massive task’ to reach the top five – and he’s right.

But with promotion rivals dropping points left, right and centre in their games in hand, all Telford can do is keep winning.

Monday night saw Stalybridge lose at Droylsden, and Hinckley and Corby draw – results that Telford would have happily handpicked had they been given the chance.

No matter how slim the chances are the Bucks simply need a maximum haul of 15 points from their final five games.

As Chambers himself said: “It’s a massive task and we’ve still got a mountain to climb to get into the play-offs, but we got the three points and all we can do is look after ourselves.”

Testing trips to Ilkeston and a charging Workington represent Telford’s biggest chance of a slip up, but in a season of so many twists and turns, there is almost certain to be one more in the final month of the season.
