Bucks rule out new player activity

Tuesday 30th March 2010, 9:48AM BST.

AFC Telford United have ruled out any last ditch player activity ahead of the close of the non-League transfer window tomorrow.

Clubs below Blue Square Premier level have until 5pm tomorrow to sign or sell players, but Telford assistant manager Larry Chambers believes that recruiting anyone at this stage would be a gamble too far.

The Bucks have already brought in two new faces over the last fortnight, with striker Mark Beesley joining on loan from Cambridge and wide man Matt Blair signing from Redditch until the end of the season.

“There’s nothing else going on,” Chambers confirmed. “We’ve been trying to bring in people better than what we’ve got for four weeks.

“We’ve taken a gamble on people like Mark Beesley, but anyone we brought in now would have to be guaranteed to make an instant impact with just five games left.

“If we bring in a midfielder, is her really going to be better than Liam Blakeman and Kevin O’Connor?

“If we for a striker, can guarantee it will be someone who does a better job than Andy Brown?”

Meanwhile, four of Telford’s play-off rivals were in action last night, Droylsden strengthening their case by defeating free-falling Stalybridge 3-2.

Bucks boss Rob Smith made the trip to Hinckley to take in their 1-1 draw with Corby.

That result leaves Telford in sixth place, just three points behind Hinckley and on the same number of games played.

“It looks like there are four teams in it for that last play-off place,” said Chambers. “It may be one from Hinckley, us, Workington and Ilkeston.

“On paper, we’ve not got a bad run-in, and Saturday’s trip to Ilkeston is a big game.”
