A driver crashed a car into a lamppost outside a Shropshire school and is believed to have set it on fire before fleeing the scene.
The blue Vauxhall Astra was destroyed as a result of the fire outside Dothill Junior School in Wellington, Telford, at about 11pm yesterday.
Today police said they had launched an investigation to see if the car had been reported stolen. Ian Pugh, crew manager at Wellington Fire Station, said arson attacks were a danger to the public.
He said: “The car was destroyed by the fire and we suspect it’s deliberate. It appears like it was more of a stolen vehicle, but that’s for the police to decide.
“This sort of thing comes in spates but we do get a lot of stolen vehicles that are deliberately set on fire and this holds up the appliance and causes additional dangers.
“Any arson attacks have a knock-on effect that people are not aware of because the appliance is not available for other fire calls.”
Pete Simmonds, spokesman for Telford police, said: “It appears that the car collided with the street furniture and then burst into flames.
“The vehicle has been recovered but we can’t say if it’s deliberate or a drunk driver that has crashed. We are waiting to see if the vehicle is reported stolen.
“The indications are that it was a blue Vauxhall Astra.”
