Theft case tipster’s bail bid is refused
Saturday 27th March 2010, 11:30AM GMT.
A former jockey and professional tipster who admitted stealing £4,000 from a Shropshire pub landlord will be sentenced at crown court.
Terrence Kirby, 44, of no fixed abode, appeared at Shrewsbury Magistrates Court yesterday via video link from HMP Dovegate.
He admitted a charge of theft from George Lewis, former landlord of The Bell Inn, Cross Houses, at an earlier hearing, but appeared at court yesterday to appeal for bail.
Magistrates refused bail and said sentencing would take place at Shrewsbury Crown Court on a date to be fixed and remanded him in custody.
Mr Adam Warner, prosecuting, told the court that Kirby was at the pub on February 24, 2008, when Mr Lewis was in the process of moving out.
He said: “He saw a table with a draw outside and opened the draw and took £4,000 cash from inside before leaving the scene.”
Mr Kirby then left the country and spent time in Ireland before returning to the UK earlier this year, when he was arrested and charged, the court heard.
Mr Martin Rogerson, for Kirby, said his client is a professional jockey-turned-tipster, who had been on his way to Wolverhampton races when he stopped at the pub and took the money.
