Club serves up badminton marathon
Saturday 27th March 2010, 11:30AM GMT.
Sports enthusiasts from the Shropshire and Welsh border were due to begin a 24-hour sponsored badminton session today.
Churchstoke Badminton Club is holding the event to recruit more members and raise money for Sports Relief.
The fundraiser was due to get under way at 10am at Churchstoke Community Hall and run for 24 hours.
The challenge sees 16 young players playing badminton all the time on a rota basis for the whole 24 hours with several adults supervising throughout.
Spokeswoman Donna Winks said: “Churchstoke Badminton Club is a small club run mainly for the young people of our community with a general turnout of 15 young people each week. The club charges a minimal amount in order to secure the hall and therefore, has little funding for this charity event.
“We have consequently, relied on the kindness of local businesses to support us. We have received donations from Tesco, Clubsport and Severn Trophies helping us to hold this event hopefully creating an exciting and fun event for our members.
“Our goal is to provide an exciting and enjoyable sporting event where the young people of our club and others from our community can get together while having lots of fun and raising money for charity.”
