Town directors in plea for support

Thursday 25th March 2010, 12:53PM GMT.

Keith SayfritzShrewsbury Town’s board of directors today issued a rallying cry to the club’s frustrated fans, urging: “Roar us to promotion.”

The mood among supporters of the men in blue-and-amber has been bleak in recent days, after a run of three successive defeats that has seen them drop to 10th in League Two.

But vice chairman Keith Sayfritz, representing chairman Roland Wycherley and the board, has called on fans to put their frustrations with manager Paul Simpson’s team to one side – starting with the visit of bottom team Darlington on Saturday.

“We are still in there with a great opportunity to achieve promotion and it would be a massive help at this stage if everyone gets behind Paul and his team,” said Sayfritz.

“We are lucky to have tremendous support, and we just want to reproduce the same sort of feeling that we had when we won at Milton Keynes in 2007 and at Bury in the play-offs last year.

“There will be highs and lows on the run-in I’m sure, but we still believe we can achieve success and my plea would be for the fans to get right behind us.”

Sayfritz accepts that there have been a number of disappointments this season – pointing to the FA Cup defeat against non-League Staines and League losses at lowly Darlington and Grimsby as cases in point.

But he insists that the directors feel those setbacks no less keenly than the supporters, adding: “We’re fans as well, and we feel the same frustrations. This has been a season of some lows, but a lot of highs as well.

“If we managed to get a win on Saturday we’d have the same points total as we had at the same stage last season so, as far as we’re concerned, there’s still a lot to play for.

“The spirit among the squad is excellent. I have the privilege of travelling with the team and I know everything is done right in the preparation for every game.

“Maybe one day we’ll be 15 points clear of a division with four games to go, and that would be fantastic. We’re not now, but we still have a great opportunity.”

Reducing the ticket prices might get you some more support, but I bet you won’t be doing that will you?

Besides what’s all this about unhappy fans, thought you were meant to be the most family friendly club? Who needs promotion when you’ve got that valuable accolade?!

You could start by giving a refund to the near 300 people who wasted their time and money going to Aldershot last weekend without seeing one effort on goal.

I couldn’t agree more with Mr SAYFRITZ. It’s time to be positive and with no disrespect to Darlington, Saturday is a must win game for the Shrews. Come on us real fans, lets get behind the club!!

I can understand why the board are keen to get support behind the team, but I think the “everything will be ok” approach isn’t helpful. Supporters have known for sometime that there are key areas of the team that are not working and these have not been addressed by the manager. While we could still make the play-offs the side is still a very long way from being a league 1 side, and until the manager and board take steps to address this its asking a lot of the fans to get behind a side which basically isn’t good enough for promotion.
I’m all for supporting the side, but some of the statements from the club in recent weeks suggest they haven’t fully grasped the depth of the problems in the side. Lets not create false hope for this season.

where have all the ‘highs’ Sayfrits mentions we have had this season. I sure as hell can’t remember any !
Simpson is a failure that should not be at this great club. The fans deserve better and the board are kidding themselves if they feel we will ever progress under this man. He has managed some of the most inept displays I have ever witnessed, Blyth Spartans, Staines Town, Darlo, Grimsby, Rochdale and many many more. If the board want more support from the fans than have some balls and get rid of Simpson !

Its very difficult to be positive after yesterday’s debacle and I believe Mr Simpson has now lost the crowd – so its time to go Mr Simpson – it is more than just key areas of the team that are not working now.
