Rugby players spared jail for drunken brawl

Five Clee Hill rugby players who took part in a drunken brawl which left a man with a broken jaw have been spared jail sentences. The fight took place in Tenbury Wells in November 2008.
Richard Jay still has problems eating after his jaw was smashed in three places in the attack at The Crow pub in Tenbury Wells, Worcester Crown Court heard.
He was hit by 23-year-old Richard Fletcher and kicked as he lay on the floor.
Fletcher, of Cleobury Meadows, Cleobury Mortimer, had been out drinking with Clee Hill Rugby Club team-mates on November 8, 2008. He was convicted after trial of causing grievous bodily harm.
Four of his team-mates – Robert Fletcher, 25, of Quarry Gardens, Ludlow; Stefan Brick, 21, of Pool Cottages, Clee Hill; Gareth Powell, 30, of Hints Meadow, Coreley, Ludlow; and Mark Simpson, 40, of Springfield Park, Clee Hill, also admitted affray.
Janet Pitt-Lewis, for Richard Fletcher, said he had been affected by alcohol.
Richard Fletcher was given a 12-month jail sentence suspended for two years, ordered to 250 hours unpaid work and observe a six-month overnight curfew at weekends.
Robert Fletcher was ordered to pay £500 costs with a £15 victim surcharge.
Brick, Powell and Simpson were each given a 12-month community order with 300 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay £500 costs.
