Crash-hit bypass reopens

The scene on the A5 bridge after the accident
The A5 Chirk bypass reopened today three days after two people were killed in a horrific crash.
The reopening came as fresh calls were made for improvements to the A5 from MP Owen Paterson.
The main route, which takes thousands of vehicles from Shropshire into North Wales, opened at 8am today.
Wrexham Council spokeswoman Gill Stevens said: “The road was due to reopen at 6am but opened at 8am because line marking work had to be done.”
Two drivers died in the crash involving a cattle wagon, a car and a tanker on Monday.
Cattle plunged 100 feet to their deaths when the livestock lorry was left hanging over the parapet of the viaduct carrying the trunk road over the River Ceiriog.
Mr Paterson said today he would press the Government for answers on why recommendations for the A5 between Shrewsbury and the Welsh border to be dualled have never been taken up.

Could he please get in his time machine and publish the verdict of the inquest which hasn’t taken place yet so we can confirm this accident wouldn’t have happened if it was duel carriageway.
How low can you go to score cheap political points out of people’s deaths.

The road where the accident happened should not be made into a dual carriage way. That bridge is no where near wide enough. If people drove how they were meant to and weren’t so impatient there would not be anywhere near the amount of accidents along that stretch of road. I could not believe it when I read that the road markings are confusing. How are they confusing? It is a single carriage way (which should have double white lines to indicate no overtaking) and then further up it has a crawler lane and a passing lane which I might add on numerous occassions an idiot coming down the hill decides to cross the double white lines and overtake. The road is not the problem it is the drivers.

Sarah Pirie has defined the problem clearly – it’s driving that causes accidents, not perfectly good, clear roads.
The worst problem that I see today, particularly on the A5/A483, is impatience. Drivers can’t wait 30 seconds or a minute to overtake a slightly slower vehicle (even one just within the speed limit) and take risks. I don’t know if that caused this crash, but it has given me a number of scares!
