West Mid Show hopes boosted by £20,000 credit deal

Wednesday 24th March 2010, 11:59AM GMT.

Bosses of the West Mid Show were today putting more than £20,000 into the coffers after creditors agreed to wait up to eight years for their cash.

The Shropshire and West Midlands Agricultural Society last night agreed a legally binding contract with creditors who are owed more than £160,000.

Chairman Roy Dodd, the architect of the new Shropshire County Show which will replace the West Mid, said there was only £8,000 in the society’s current account, but £20,000 was waiting to be paid in following the Creditors Voluntary Arrangement.

Today he issued a rallying call to the show’s hundreds of annual members who had been holding off on paying their 2010 membership.

“It’s all go now, we have the green light. We would really appreciate the 800 or so members now giving us their cheques for £25 and we want the people of Shropshire to support the show.

“This is not a reduced show, we have a great theme of from gate to plate and we need everyone’s support to make this a success.”

Until the CVA had been officially agreed, none of the £20,000 in membership fees, advance payments for trade stands and from exhibitors could be paid into the society’s accounts.

Show bosses needed creditors owed more than 75 per cent of the total value of the debt to agree to the CVA with last night seeing 88 per cent vote in favour.

About 80 per cent of society members who attended the meeting backed the CVA, although those present account for only three per cent of the society’s total membership of about 2,000.

A proposal on investigating selling some of the society’s trophies was rejected.

Creditors will be paid at least £15,000 in the first year followed by £30,000 a year for seven years.
