Problems surrounding pothole-related damage continue to be costly for drivers in south Shropshire, garage bosses claimed today.

Tyre fitters at HiQ in Corve Street, Ludlow, are dealing with an average of 15 extra pothole-related car problems per week, after the freezing weather conditions broke up road surfaces up and down the country.

Centre owner Darren Haszczyn said: “Pothole damage continues to keep our staff busy, who are reporting anything between 10 and 30 pothole-related calls per week.

“Hitting a pothole can damage the tyres, wheel, suspension or steering. It could even cause an accident. We can only urge motorists to continue to drive with caution.”

Andy Watkins, manager of Ian Jones Tyres in Ludlow, said it had also seen mo- re customers with pothole-related damage. He said: “When we were having the bad weather we saw a lot of pothole-related damage.”

Bob Ellis, Shropshire Council’s head of environmental maintenance, said staff have been checking for potholes and making repairs across the county.

“We are planning our mai- ntenance work for 2010/11 in response to the damage caused to the highway network by the severe winter conditions,” he said.

“Repair work will be prioritised and all high risk potholes that we are aware of will be made safe in the first instance, prior to permanent repairs being scheduled.”

Potholes can be reported to the highways number 0345 678 9006.
