Letter: Let’s have facts on relief road

Wednesday 24th March 2010, 7:00AM GMT.

TyresLetter: When does information become propaganda? Shropshire Council, in its Your Shropshire magazine, includes an article on the Shrewsbury NW Relief Road which is completely one-sided.

It only gives a list of so-called “benefits”, nearly all of which could be achieved without the road. It completely omits any mention of the cost (£100m) and the environmental damage. The article is nothing short of pro-road propaganda rather than the balanced information that should be provided.

With public consultations due in April, I hope that both sides of the argument will be available to Shrewsbury residents, and not the biased travesty that the Your Shropshire contains.

I heartily agree Geoff. I challenge anyone who supports this road to take an afternoon spring stroll along the river from Darwin’s house down to Shelton and beyond: an oasis of rural tranquility on the doorstep of the town centre – which will be utterly destroyed by driving a blooming great road through it. You will soon change your mind about this monstrous carbuncle.
All for a potential time saving of 5-10 minutes to appease the vociferous motor lobby.
The council should be investing in new railway stations at Harlscott and Meole Brace (which would bring long lasting benefits to cross-town travel) instead of simply wasting tax payers’ money creating more car journeys and, ultimately, congestion. Building roads to get out of the problem is outdated and pointless – transport plannign has moved on now, it’s a shame Shropshire Council haven’t realised this yet.

As a resident of the north west of Shrewsbury I feel this road can’t be built fast enough, at peak times the main roads in this part of town are pretty much gridlocked, all through traffic needs to be kept out of the town completely.

The only travesty is idealistic tree-huggers being allowed to extend the timescale of this project through selfish rants.

The reason they listed the benefits is because there are many and it’s money well spent.

I’ve already posted a comment here supporting Geoff’s letter but the bods at Shropshire Star don’t seem to have approved it yet…
Vested interests at work or just busy day at the Star offices?

Geoff Black wants to try living where I do on the Northwest of Shrewsbury. Grid locked roads, HGV noise and vibration, and black exhaust pollution in our houses. Kavan has said exactly what people in Copthorne, Porthill and Shelton all think.
Roll on the NWRR and let the minority members of the Shrewsbury flat-earth Society look for something else to whinge about.

i am totally against this road, it will destroy the countrysdie and lead to shrewsbury expanding into an ugly modern town with generic out of town superstores and modern architecture

    lets keep shrewsbury special

If this road goes ahead the value of our home will probably go up and the area we live in will become quieter. I still don’t agree with it. You can’t put a road through this beautiful countryside. The traffic around the area just isn’t that bad. Sorry but don’t drive through town, there are other ways round.
