Staffordshire Hoard to stay in region

Tuesday 23rd March 2010, 2:15PM GMT.

The Staffordshire Hoard of Anglo Saxon treasure found last year will stay in the West Midlands, it was announced today.

The hoard was found by a metal-detecting enthusiast last year and had been on sale for £3.3 million.

Today it was announced that the National Heritage Memorial Fund was giving a grant of £1.585m to a fund set up to buy the treasure for the region.

The money will be added to cash raised by Stoke and Birmingham Councils and prevents the collection being sold off in pieces to private collectiors.
