Pensioner killed brother then himself

Tuesday 23rd March 2010, 6:36PM GMT.

A Shropshire pensioner stabbed his brother to death before killing himself, an inquest heard.

John Corbett, 77, was found dead in bed at the home in Telford he had shared for more than 50 years with brother Ted Corbett.

The discovery came minutes after Ted, 66, of The Nabb, St Georges, handed a note and a pair of house keys to neighbour Carol Meeson before driving off in his car on December 21 last year.

An inquest at Telford Magistrates Court today heard police discovered his car next to the River Severn at Cressage 20 minutes later and passers-by reported seeing a body in the river.

His body was eventually discovered by police in the river near Buildwas Bridge on February 2.

Post-mortems carried out on the two men revealed John Corbett died as a result of “blunt trauma to head and face and stab wounds to neck”.

The court heard Ted Corbett’s death was caused by drowning.

Giving evidence, Detective Inspector Nick Haggitt, who led the investigation into the two deaths, said: “Edward (Ted) took the life of Frank (John) Corbett and then took his own life.”

Summing up, Telford & Wrekin coroner Mr John Ellery said: “I am satisfied Frank John Corbett was unlawfully killed and so that is my verdict.

“I am also satisfied beyond reasonable doubt Edward Corbett killed himself.”

Verdicts of unlawful killing and suicide were recorded on the two men.
