Larry: Grab our glimmer of hope

Larry Chambers (Picture by James Baylis)Larry Chambers has told AFC Telford United to focus on their own games – after the Blue Square North play-off race took a fresh twist with more freak results.

The Bucks chances of a top five finish looked doomed after they went down 1-0 at home to Stalybridge Celtic on Saturday – their sixth game without a win.

They still remain big outsiders today, though a surprise defeat for Stalybridge and a draw for fourth-placed Hinckley to Blyth Spartans last night have offered the faintest glimmer of hope.

It could have been even better for Telford, with Blyth missing a last minute penalty in their game, but the Bucks’ assistant manager insists it all means nothing unless the Bucks take care of their own poor form.

“It’s as if someone out there wants to give us a slight chance,” said Chambers.

“Stalybridge have got Fleetwood (the league leaders) on Thursday too, and that won’t be easy for them – but we need to start winning ourselves.

“I’m immune to the opposition’s results now, because we should only be worrying about looking after our own games.

“It doesn’t really matter what happens to other teams because nobody else can help us now.”

Chambers also hopes to have a full squad available for training tonight, with a bug having swept through the camp over the weekend.

Coach Steve Wynn and physio Rudy Farquharson were the first to suffer, and players Andy Brown, Danny Carey-Bertram, Sean Newton and Kevin O’Connor have all been ill.

“Everyone’s had a couple of days off and I think they’re slowly getting over it,” added Chambers.

“Browny’s the only real doubt tonight as he was quite bad on Saturday, and I’d imagine he might need a day or two more.”
