Showground licence gets go-ahead
Monday 22nd March 2010, 1:15PM GMT.

Bosses behind a reformed West Mid Show were today granted a licence to stage the event in Shrewsbury this summer – despite residents’ objections.
Members of Shropshire Council’s central licensing sub-committee met at Shirehall today to discuss a new premises licence for Berwick Road Showground in Shrewsbury.
The previous agreement for the showground, where the 125-year-old event has been held, lapsed after organisers Shropshire and West Midland Agricultural Society hit financial difficulties last year.
Councillors granted a new licence which will save the show and see a return of a number of popular events at the site such as the Shrewsbury Folk Festival.
During the meeting councillors heard from residents who were concerned about the number of events which have been held at the showground in recent years.
Sharon Leach, from Darwin Gardens, said: “We moved here nine years ago and accepted the show would be held annually.
“But in 2009 from April 11 to September 27 there were only six weekends when there were no activities at the showground – that’s not a lot of peace for us.”
Roy Dodd, show trustee, said he was keen to work with residents.
He added: “Shropshire should have a county show, the 125-year history shouldn’t disappear.”
Organisers have put forward a number of measures to prevent public nuisance and crime, ensure safety and protect children from harm.
These include a restriction on the number of outdoor music events, a maximum occupancy of 360 for the members’ pavilion and the use of SIA registered stewards. Noise levels will also be monitored and outdoor events will finish by 11.30pm.
