Letter: Turning a deaf ear to too many charity pleas
Monday 22nd March 2010, 8:02AM GMT.
Letter: In my street we average one clothing appeal bag each week. I have no problem with helping out; however I would like to point out to these charitable organisations that asking people to donate on a weekly basis is over the top.
The estate I live on is social housing in an area of high unemployment.
Most of the people in this area have barely enough income to clothe themselves never mind the rest of the nation.
I have heard it said that shopping in charity shops for clothes has now become more expensive than going into some of the mainstream shops. Britain is ‘charity ridden’, it’s big business with chief executives demanding high salaries.
From now on the bags will be used as bin liners, when and if I can afford to turn out clothes they will go to the clothing banks.
I am not going to give way to emotional blackmail any longer.

Many of them are not actually charities they are scams collecting to sell the materials on, much better to take to the shop or ask them if they can collect from you. Or use freecycle.

I wouldn’t get too upset about it. Just because they leave a bag on your doorstep doesn’t mean they’re demanding anything from you. They’re leaving it on the off chance that you may have something to put in it. If you do, then that’s all well and good, but if you don’t then nobody’s going to be offended.

Some charity shops ARE geting very expensive. And they are more expensive than some supermarket clothing.

I have at least 3 bags a week, pushed through my door, so i use them as rubbish bags. If i have any old clothes i need to get rid of, i take them to a charity bin on our local pub carpark.

ONLY one a week – recently in 2 weeks I received 12! Some of them were to be collected on the same day – did the first one to collect only take their bags???
