A residents’ group today claimed a revised road layout for Oswestry’s preferred new supermarket site would fail to resolve the development’s potential traffic problems.

J Ross Developments, the company behind plans to build the store on the Central Car Park, has lodged the revised layout with Shropshire Council planners after being told on Thursday their bid would fail unless the problems were resolved.

If the problems can be resolved, it is likely their bid would win the four-way race for the new multi-million pound store, the crunch meeting heard.

But members of the Trinity Area Residents’ Association, who opposed the firm’s plans, said that they have now seen the new revised layout and they remain unhappy.

Group secretary Peter Lloyd said: “At present the situation is clear – the scheme does not work in traffic terms.

“This will in no way reduce the amount of traffic generated by the scheme.”

He added: “It does not tackle the principal problem with the proposed scheme, which is that it seeks to shoehorn an oversized store into an unsuitable site surrounded by a network of narrow streets.

“Creating a new congested, slow-moving gyratory system around Leg Street, Oswald Road and Black Gate Street will not adequately address the congestion problems this oversized project would cause in Salop Road.”

This plan is just TOO BIG. All the other plans are TOO BIG. There’s no need for any of them and they’d ruin the town.

The town centre car park plan should be refused.
Oswestry needs a cinema. This proposal will only provide one screen and less than 200 seats. The Richard Burbidge site will provide more screens and more seats. Oswestry is growing with more housing developlments approved and more families in the area. Welshpool has a cinema, why not Oswestry.
