Drayton stunned by Anslow exit
Monday 22nd March 2010, 1:24PM GMT.
Sent off and suspended while skippering Market Drayton Town at Belper three weeks ago, full back Gary Anslow is expected to play in the club’s big UniBond League South derby at Chasetown tomorrow evening – for the opposition!
Anslow, who signed for Chasetown on Friday evening, has been with Town since the club came into being eight years ago, apart from a brief spell at Hednesford earlier this season.
His shock departure was hardly the preparation Drayton wanted for Saturday’s visit of Sheffield FC and after a stormy 5-1 defeat, manager Simon Line was critical of Anslow’s timing.
He said: “Market Drayton have been very fair to Gary in many ways down the years. I understand his ambition to test himself at a bigger club but, given our situation, I would have thought he could at least have stayed until the end of the season.
“We feel rather let down. Like me, he was welcomed back from Hednesford with no recriminations and I subsequently asked him to become captain.
“To leave now, when he knows we are having a tough time and with only five weeks or so of the season left, is very disappointing, to say the least.”
Drayton goalkeeper Steve Taylor can’t play tomorrow at Chasetown so assistant manager Andy Pryce will be taking the gloves.
With Chasetown fighting to rekindle their slim promotion hopes, Pryce can expect plenty of action – but not, hopefully, of the sort he was caught up in against Sheffield – an explosive fracas at Greenfields.
