Are play-off hopes disappearing?

Three defeats in a row, no goals scored, and Town’s play-off hopes appear to be disappearing, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.

Town have hit bad form at a time when we need to be at our best and Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to promotion rivals Aldershot was another blow to our chances of finally getting out of this division.

Truth of the matter is we were well beaten on Saturday and even more worrying was our lack of chances created. We don’t look like scoring at the moment and if the players don’t find their scoring boots soon we won’t win matches.

Town’s poor run of results has left many fans fearing the worst for the remainder of the season and as soon as a club’s supporters lose faith, then it is very unlikely the team is going to perform on the pitch.

Is it fair we start pointing fingers at individuals or can we just say as a team we are not good enough to go up this season?

All I would say about Simpson is that he seems to have got more critical of the players as the season has gone on, which hasn’t helped their confidence. And where were the big name signings we needed in January or even at the start of the season to be able to compete against the best?

On the positive side – yes there is one – we are still only three points adrift of the play-offs and seven of our nine remaining matches are against teams below us.

Now is the time for experienced heads such as Coughlan, Murray, Holden and Cureton to get us over that finish line and provide fans with a happy end to the season.

If only we were as good on the pitch as we are off it having won the E.ON Family Club of the Year award for League Two for the second successive year.

If we are to get our promotion challenge back on track then the next game is an absolute must win. Three defeats in a row and no goals scored is a bad habit to get into, which must be put right sooner rather than later.

On paper a home game on Saturday against rock bottom Darlington – winners of four league matches all season – seems a piece of cake.

But we mustn’t forget we have struggled against ‘inferior’ opposition this season and one of Darlington’s victories was against us in October when they beat us 2-1.

Poor team & poor manager that’s the problem. Town fans shouldn’t feel like they have let a lead slip because their position in the table earlier in the season was because they were knocked out of cup games early and were able to play a lot more league games as a result. The other teams are playing the games in hand and are just taking their rightful places in the table. STFC are mediocre at best. However, it doesn’t matter about promotion or cups – everyone knows that the real jewell in the crown is the family friendly club award – well worth the cost of a season ticket! Well done to town for building a vastly oversized stadiums so families have loads of empty seats on which to spread the picnic over!

The season is not yet over, there are still 27 points up for grabs, and lets not forget it went right down to the last game last season.
If we can make the play-offs then great, if not then let’s take stock and see what can be done to take the Town for perenial play-off hopes to genuine promotion candidates.
I see no point being negative just yet, lets keep behind the team and do what we can from the terraces (or seats)to help them strive to get back up the league table.

I still can’t get over the fact that we were set up far too defensively on Saturday and didn’t muster one effort on goal. Cureton was also introduced with just 10 minutes left.

We carry no threat without Hibbert and our season now depends on keeping him fit.

After going to Shots on Saturday, quite frankly I’ve lost interest. If the players can’t be bothered to even create one attempt on goal then why should I make the effort too?
