New road headache for town motorists
Saturday 20th March 2010, 11:29AM GMT.
A major road into Shrewsbury town centre will be closed one way to traffic – providing motorists with yet another headache.
Severn Trent Water and Shropshire Council are set to carry out a week of works on Sundorne Road into the town from Monday.
It will mean traffic travelling towards the town centre is diverted away via the A49, the council said today.
Only last week highways officials told town drivers to expect four months of delays at Harlescott crossroads from April 12 as part of a major £1.4 million road improvement scheme.
Hugh Dannatt, Shropshire Council’s group manager for highway and traffic engineering, said today the latest works were to enable Severn Trent Water to carry out maintenance work and the council to carry out resurfacing work.
He said: “The works will start on Monday and will affect Sundorne Road from the Albert Road turning to the Heathgates island.”
A number of roadworks are currently on-going or have just been completed, including in the town centre and main access routes.
Separate water mains work took place in Sundorne Road last year, with traffic lights in place for more than two weeks.
As well as causing delays on other routes in the area during busy rush hour periods, residents living off Sundorne Road expressed concerns about motorists using usually quiet roads to avoid the congestion.
