Painting shows panorama of town in 1630s

    It is old St Chad’s but St George’s Frankwell was built in 1832, 200 years after this painting. The tower on the left of the 1630 image is in fact the tower of the Abbey church. The reason it seems somewhat unfamiliar to our eyes is that in 1630 it had an extra, grey, storey. By this time grey Grinshill stone was the high status material (see top storey’s of St Mary’s and St Julians’), The extra storey was removed during the Civil War ten years later probably to prevent its use as gun emplacement or observation post. An image of the 1650s shows the tower brutally cut off. By the early 18th century it had the brick crenellations familiar to us today. For more on the painting follow this link;
