Last plea to council bosses on store bid
Wednesday 17th March 2010, 12:32PM GMT.
Oswestry’s independent traders and campaigners today made a last gasp plea to council chiefs to ditch plans for a new supermarket for the town.
Shropshire Council’s strategic planning committee will discuss at a crunch meeting tomorrow which one of four rival planning applications should get the go-ahead.
Council planning officers have indicated that the new store should be built either on timber firm Richard Burbidge Ltd’s Whittington Road site or on the Central Car Park.
But a coalition of local groups have been campaigning to gather public support against any new multi-million pound store.
Spokeswoman Jessie Miller said: “The impact of an out-of-town supermarket on Oswestry’s town centre would be devastating. Up to £30 million worth of trade could be taken from existing traders.”
The strategic planning committee will meet tomorrow at 1pm at the Lion Quays Hotel.

I wonder how many people would actually welcome another supermarket plus the cinema dental surgery offices and additional restaurants which would be created?

No they haven’t the decision is tomorrow. The council would be really putting their foot in it if they did disclose this information before they have completed the decision process.
