Overseas pro duo sign on

Wellington have unveiled two new sigings as they prepare for life back among the big boys of Midlands cricket, writes JAMES GARRISON.

South African Gerhard Strydom will be the overseas professional at the Orleton Park club, while Worcestershire’s James Cameron will be their contracted player.

Strydom, 30, has played First Class cricket in his homeland for Boland and South Western Districts and the Cape-Town born left handed batsman has averaged 34 throughout a nine-year career.

Zimbabwe-born Cameron, who has spent the last four years playing A grade cricket in Perth, is able to sign for Wellington as he holds a British passport.

The left-handed batsman and medium paced bowler joined Worcestershire during the winter and will replace Gloucestershire’s Kadeer Ali as Wellington’s contracted player.

“Gerhard is very experienced and will be available to play every game for us,” said Wellington spokesman Adam Byram.

“He has been overe here three or four times for a season and done very well playing in the Irish League where a lot of Ireland’s national team were playing.

“James was coached by John Rogers (father of former Wellington professional Chris Rogers) in Australia.

“Kadeer has done a great job for us but we would probably only get four or five games out of him a season.

“With James, we are hoping that will rise into double figures.”
