Letter: UK soon to be a memory
Tuesday 16th March 2010, 7:06AM GMT.
Letter: On March 5 our MPs took time off from awarding themselves more money in order to throw out the Lisbon Treaty (Referendum) Bill. This took away the British public’s last chance to have a say in whether the Queen should remain as the United Kingdom’s head of state or the United Kingdom cease to exist at all.
When the Lisbon Treaty comes into effect the United Kingdom will be broken up.
Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and London will be individual “regions” (states) in the United States of Europe.
The rest of England will be divided into eight other states. Our Queen will have no state to be head of and our “President of the United States of Europe” will be Herman van Rumpoy (he has already been appointed).
If we do not like what Herman van Rumpoy tells us to do there is no mechanism to displace him (even Hitler had to win an election).
This situation has been sought eagerly by the Liberal Democrats and the Labour Party (Gordon Brown signed the Lisbon Treaty).
The Conservative Party is too craven to oppose it (David Cameron and Ken Clarke approve of it).
What a disingenuous end to the United Kingdom which was once believed to be the oldest democracy in the world.
The British people who, together with the rest of the English-speaking world, have rescued Europe from evil dictatorships several times in the past, are now surrendering meekly to the European Commission in a craven manner our forefathers would never have considered. We should hang our heads in shame.

That was quite a nationalistic rant!
I don’t know the ins and outs, but I wouldn’t mind betting the above letter is embellished with one or two (or many) exaggerations.

Still living in the past, eh, Dennis?

Maybe one day the deluded folk of this island will realise just how you have been manipulated.

How can the Shropshire Star publish such a letter? Not a single sentence is true!

Practically all of those now sitting in Westminster were elected on a promise to hold a referendum on the EU Constitution! This of course pushed any debate about the Constitution to the back of the burner during the last election, because we were promised a full debate and a chance to vote by all parties. The Conservative leader gave a cast iron promise to hold a referendum on the Lisbon treaty (the reworked EU Constitution after it was rejected by three countries who were allowed to vote)
We have had no debate! We have had no referendum! All parties have reneged on their promise and destroyed our trust in our own parliament.
This was a private members bill introduced to force the government to hold the promised referendum and thus restore public trust in those we elect.
We should now make it clear to those who have treated their voters with such contempt that this is totally unacceptable. So in the next few weeks when your local MP comes running up your path seeking your vote in order to keep their seat, they should be sent away with one message and one message only
No Referendum! No Vote!
And then on poling day we should vote for anyone other than our sitting MP, anyone other than the party hack anyone other than those who have been by their own actions to be liars and cheats who is quite content to put party before voter and The EU before their own Nation state. Only then will Messrs Brown, Clegg and Cameron begin to get the message that enough is enough.

It would be easy to poke fun at Denis and his massively deluded understanding of the Lisbon Treaty. But I actually feel quite sorry for him, and for the rest of the folk who get their world opinions from crisp packets. It must be quite frustrating being so narrow minded.

@david: could you tell me, sentence by sentence which parts are false? the first part seems to be purely factual to me. (Up until “The rest of England will be divided into eight other states.”) Then it seems to go into more emotive language that ould be disputed.
1. Lisbon Treaty (Referendum) Bill thrown out March 5?
2. Public has not more say as to whether or not the Lisbon treaty gets implemented?
3. The UK will be broken up into different regions?
4. von rompey is not elected directly and the uk public could not remove him?
5. What would the queen be head of?

Are people really suggesting that the monarchy has any true consitutional power in this day and age? Do you really want it to have?!
The Lisbon treaty was just that – a treaty – in many ways less significant than previous treaties – it was not a constitution.
Devolution of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is not an invention of the EU – it is what the people of those countries and provinces want for themselves. The UK is already split into different regions.
Our laws are made by our own elected parliament, just as laws in France, Germany, Italy etc. are made by theirs. We are part of Europe – the only other option would be to leave ourselves completely unprotected from the scourge of US-led globalisation (and we have enough of that already!).
We are not the power we were in the days of Empire – the reshuffling of power in the immediate aftermath of WWII saw to that, and the idyllic idea of us being able to stand alone against global trade and competition without being part of one of the major world trading blocs is, and always was, a myth.
Get over it and move on Mr Allen…

I am English or broadly British. That fact will not change although in truth I care little about it and have no strong sense of national identity. Nationalism has its place only in times of war not in a changing international political climate. I do believe we have moved on from our days of empire and in reality we are part of Europe and the wider world. That Ukip was formed by an embittered ex Conservative throwing his political dummy out of the pram is still reflected in some of the nationalistic and isolationist rants of that party’s supporters. I find it quite pitiful to behold
Report abuse
@peter: so the only way to protect ourselves from US-led globalisation is through EU-led globalisation?
Surely you jest! UK laws can be made by our own elected parliament – as long as the laws happen to be in agreement with EU laws. The truth is, we could save a lot of money by getting rid of our own politicians – cut out the middleman who just exist to rubber stamp EU directives.

So Dennis, are you telling me that we no longer live in the Uk, we now live in The United States Of Europe and Gordon Brown is no longer the Prime Minister..
Well i thought i might have seen something on the telly about this.

Peter the Lisbon treaty is the constitution of the EU as are all of its treaties.
ie: The system of fundamental principles according to which a nation, state, corporation, or the like, is governed and therefore the document embodying these principles.
England is not naturally divided into 8 different regions this was an agreement with the EU based on the concept of regional government. This concept is enhanced by the EU with the funding programmes, Scotland and Wales are also EU regions. The whole devolution programme has been in line with EU agreements it is an attempt to undermine the concept of the nation state.
What percentage of out laws are made by those we elect in our own parliament what percentage has no EU influence. Please supply proof of your argument!
If you want to indulge in an anti USA rant please be specific in what way does the EU protect us from The “scourge of US-led globalisation” when the EU is part and parcel of the scourge of globalisation? The USA if anything is standing against the concept of globalisation it still believes in the nation state.
The EU is not only a major trading block it is a nation state in the making it has already passed beyond the realms of a confederation and is becoming a very centralised federation.
The United States of Europe was the name put forward but has for the time being been shelved however watch this space it will return.
Those who support the destruction of the nation state and want us to move swiftly toward a post democratic era should at least try to be honest about their intentions!
But the whole European Project is based on lies and misrepresentations so I do not suppose that will change anytime soon.

Marco,
We are saddled with globlisation to some extent – it’s part of global capitalism – in many respects perhaps the unacceptable face of capitalism in that it allows people’s livelihoods to be exported around the world to make a quick profit.
Do I prefer the European version to the US version? You bet I do. In Europe we have employment laws which prevent exploitative employers from sacking people without recompense, we have trade union rights, rights to consultation periods where redundancies are to be made. You try finding those things in the US!
We also get a vote in Europe – tell me the last time you voted in the US Congress or Senate…
As for the situation re. laws, within a trading bloc you would expect a degree of commonality around law and order, trade, and border control. That’s what we have.
But again I must compare with the US – we somehow seem to have agreed to a one-way extradition treaty with the US.
They want to extradite Gary McKinnon – a vulnerable adult – yet when we need someone from their military to even attend an inquest, let alone face charges – over incidents of ‘friendly fire’ we get blanked.
I’m far more worried about laws like that than I am about anything we co-operate on with our European partners.

It’s not jingoistic garb, to not agree with the EU machine, it’s the corruption, cost, and unelected inept parasites that milk it.
I will retire to Euroland and escape the tax burden and increasing dross within the UK, all within the next decade.
Happy days!!

“edward heath, maggie thatcher and gordon brown must take the blame for our lack of sovereinty”
Why choose only those? How about the rest of them James Callahan John Major Tony Blair. The last at least had the decency to acknowledge that he was committing treason. (and yes he did use that word)

i mentioned those 3 because they took decisions that affected us. ted heath took us in,harold wilson gave us a referendum, maggie took us into the erm, and yes john major gave us mastericht but wisely kept us out of euro. not sure if callaghan or blair altered our sovereignty, but i do remember the referendum in 1975 where arch rivals tony benn and enoch powell stood on the same platform arguing for the common market and a loose arrangement of trading partners and definitely not an ever federal states of europe. how sensible those two politicians were and sadly they lost the referendum. no wonder gordon brown would not have one as 70% of the country would vote no whatever the question!

“The British people who, together with the rest of the English-speaking world, have rescued Europe from evil dictatorships several times in the past, are now surrendering meekly to the European Commission in a craven manner our forefathers would never have considered”. What a selective and arrogant take on history. The British and other English speaking people have had a role to play but certainly cannot claim sole credit for “rescuing Europe”, and certainly not “several times”. If anything the defeat of Hitler’s Germany was primarily down to the Soviets who sacrificed millions of lives. Without that eastern front the western allies would have failed miserably. The British forces were also made up of hundreds of thousands of none English speaking empire “subjects”. Denis Allen has merely proved to me that Ukip is in essence “BNP lite” – an isolationist party with a narrow and largely ignorant or even idiotic world view. I just hope that come May people can see beyond Ukip’s paranoid nonsense.

i am sure the sensible public will see beyond ukip, bnp and after taking a long hard look at diddy david cameron’s party and cleggy and co will opt for the devil they know. 18 seats majority to gordon brown. remember you read it hear first

‘ 70% of the country would vote no whatever the question!’
And that’s the problem with a referendum, isn’t it? On the face of it it feels like the most direct route to a democratic decision, but in truth, more often than not, it ensures rule by the lowest common denominator.
Much as we castigate politicians, we elect them because they are experts in making law.
Cast your mind back to a few years ago, when the disgusting News of the World was cynically boosting its circulation by rabble-rousing over paedophiles. You may recall that as a result a group of morons vandalised the house of a female paediatrician! There are thousands of people in this country who buy rags like the News of the World, The Sun, and the Daily Mail, and who believe every tainted word that is printed in them.
Do you really want people that stupid directly setting laws for us? Of course in a democracy we should allow them a vote – but their two-dimensional simplistic view of the world needs to be tempered by professional lawmakers.
The truth is that the vast majority of people in this country have no idea of, and little interest in the content of the Lisbon Treaty.
To allow such ignorance to prevail and to jeopardise our future to placate a grand sulk by a group of embittered Little Englanders would be a grave mistake.
Peter: you would be happy perhaps, to get rid of elections all together! After all your lowest common denominator of stupid people also elect the MPs.
Your expressions of the clearly antidemocratic principles of the EU tell us all we really need to know about the dangers of this European project. The people must be denied the vote because the elites cannot rely on them to vote the “right way”.
So instead of actually getting out there and wining the arguments for the hearts and minds of the public, by holding an honest public debate, the EU and its supporters prefer to undermine the very basis of democracy.
So Ken – would you have our laws made directly by the same people who read the Sun and believe every word in its poisonous pages? You might as well let children make our laws.
The fact that parties such as the BNP and UKIP actively look for their support amongst those with the least sophisticated view of our society and its place in the world speaks volumes. They know that no-one who has really taken the time to consider the complexity of these issues would consider voting for them.
We need expert politicians and lawmakers – rule by referendum prevents that expertise from being applied.
Let me offer an analogy. Let us imagine that you had become ill. Would you prefer your doctor to diagnose what was wrong and to determine the appropriate treatment, or you you be happy to put your treatment directly to the vote of the people despite the fact that most of them had no specialist medical knowledge?
I’m assuming it wouldn’t be the latter, but given your fondness for letting the people speak in an ‘honest public debate’ (no matter how ill-informed they might be!), I can’t quite be sure…
Report abuse
Peter; Sun readers do not make our laws they do however elect those who are supposed to do just that but have in the main outsourced that responsibility. Also why Sun readers? Why not Guardian readers, or those who believe the pro EU biases of the BBC? Are not these people equally uninformed?
You are also confusing the ability to vote in a referendum about this – countries future constitution and making law – these, are fundamentally different things.
Why do you believe that only those who agree with you should have the vote and those who do not should be shunted to the sidelines?
Such sentiments are profoundly undemocratic! And if you were to believe in democracy then you would be humiliated to be associated with such blatant elitism.
In any case your whole argument that only stupid people oppose the EU is completely unfunded and deeply insulting. It is confirmation of the scantiness of you own arguments that you need to descend to such behaviour in an attempt to shut up questions about the EU.
Further we are not debating the concept of rule by referendum but the fact that one was promised on the EU Constitution by all parties at the previous election. These candidates did not stand for election on a platform of elitism that you are now espousing; they did not say you the stupid people do not know enough to be allowed a vote on the future of your country.
Do we really need to have an in depth knowledge of the internal workings of the EU and its treaties to understand that in a democracy we elect and can remove our own lawmakers and to then understand that as an increasing level of power is transferred to the EU that ability is continually being eroded.
