Victims of the Shrewsbury explosion today demanded answers over what caused the huge blast – complaining that they still do not know what happened.

Scott Godbold, who was seriously injured in the gas explosion, along with his girlfriend Sarah Pearse and their friends Sam Devine-Turner and Annie Davies, said that more than two months after the incident they were still in the dark.

Scott and Paul Turner, father of victim Sam, said they were determined to find out how the explosion on the corner of Bridge Street and Smithfield Road started and who, if anyone, was responsible.

Scott said: “We nearly lost our lives and I believe we deserve answers for that. It shouldn’t be put down as just another accident.

“The only thing we know is that the Health & Safety Executive has taken away a section of pipe for analysis.

“I speak on behalf of all of us when I say that we need to know what happened.”

Mr Turner, of Moston Road, said: “The HSE did tell us it would be the end of April before they can give us the final answers as to who, if anyone, is responsible but other than that they told us it was confidential and couldn’t give us anything.

“Sam always wonders why did it ever have to happen but she’s just been waiting for the end result and hoping for the best.

“If it happens to be that the HSE can’t find anyone to prosecute then we have to take civil action.”

Nobody was available for comment from the HSE today.

Meanwhile, Smithfield Road is finally expected to be open to traffic in both directions on March 26, Shropshire Council highways department said today.

I am interested and pleased that these victims are requiring answers – I was not involved in this terrible incident but as a shropshire resident and regular user of shrewsbury I ask why there have been gas scares within the town centre since the blast – transco it is time you answered .
