Motorcyclist dies in car accident

Monday 15th March 2010, 8:29AM GMT.

A motorcyclist has died after he was involved in a collision with a car in Shropshire.

The B5062 between Crudgington and Newport was closed for nearly five hours after the accident yesterday as emergency crews battled to free the man, who was trapped under the car. Detective Inspector Clive Eastwood, of West Mercia Police, said the collision just before noon involved a motorbike and a Kia MPV. The man has not been named.

Suzie Fothergill, spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: “On arrival at the scene crews found a motorbike and car that had been in collision.

“The motorcyclist, a man, was trapped underneath the car for a period of time. Once freed, unfortunately it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

The driver of the car, a woman, was treated at the scene and conveyed, via land ambulance, to Princess Royal Hospital as a precaution for further assessment and treatment.”

The accident was the first of four which emergency services had to deal with on Shropshire’s roads yesterday.

In Telford, a 30-year-old man was taken to hospital with minor injuries after his car hit a lamppost and flipped over at around 12.20pm in Hall Park Way in the town centre.

Half an hour later, a Volkswagen Golf collided with a Rover Mini Metro in Brook Road, Madeley, Telford.

Fire crews cut one woman free.

She was taken to Princess Royal Hospital, but her injuries were not thought to be serious.

Two other people received minor injuries.

And two men were taken to hospital following a two-car crash on the A449 Kidderminster Road at Alveley, Bridgnorth, just after 4pm.

Miss Fothergill said the driver of the first vehicle, a man believed to be in his 20s, was treated for head, collar bone and wrist injuries before being airlifted to Selly Oak hospital.

She said the passenger, a man believed to be in his 60s, was treated on scene for an injury to his back before being taken to Princess Royal Hospital.

A woman in the second vehicle suffered a knee injury.
