Admiral Benbow's key on display at Benbow Quay

Today Howard Thorne, managing director of Shropshire Homes, said he had contacted Mr Finch to say that the display case was at the site.

He said: “We’re delighted to have helped to solve the mystery. We wanted to ensure we included the display case at the development when we designed it and it takes pride of place at the centre of Benbow Quay.

“Admiral Benbow is an important figure in the town’s history and we are pleased to be able to include a memorial to him at the site.”

I thought this was all local common knowledge? No mystery about it.

Well I used to drink in his pub on College Hill in the 70′s when it was a bikers haunt. Lots of swarthy knaves and cut-purses partaking of the hospitality but I must say the good Admiral kept an entertaining and orderly {somehow} house.

That I am afraid is my point, it is very very local knowledge where are the signs for tourists? where is the relevent info via shrewsbury tourist websites of the item or it significance? and the ownership of the item is questionable.
This item of interest is an important item and as such should be or have been placed with shrewsbury museum(who only have a picture slide of the item) not put in the wall of an obscure development of mock georgian appartments.
The item is and would be of importance to tourists and history lovers of Benbow. Benbow is shrewsburys most important son who is not promoted at the same level as Darwin , percy thrower? and brother cadfell?.
We not only allowed developers to knock down Benbows birthplace , we have no statue or memorial of Benbow unlike other towns around the uk and this was his home town.
The powers that be in shrewsbury in my view have missed a massive opportunity here to promote shrewsbury through one if its greatest sons. Perhaps thier are reasons why he is not used ? perhaps shrewsbury has bowed to political correctnes and to promote a military hero who fought the french etc etc may not be the best person to promote shrewsbury with. What ever the reason it is to the detriment of shrewsbury. I also wonder if Hollywood were to issue plans of a film about Benbow how long would it be before the powers that be in shrewsbury make their claim that he is their most well known resident inorder to get the tourists in.

Yes. Good idea Mr.Finch. Well I’m suffering from D*rw*n Fatigue! don’t know about the rest. Time to put the Admiral ‘up there’ for a change. We could have an extortionately overpriced piece of public art commissioned!! How about a skull to go with the Quantum backbone?
