Letter: Parking fee rise will cripple us

Friday 12th March 2010, 8:39AM GMT.

A general view of Shrewsbury Town centre (Picture: PA)Letter: With businesses in Shrewsbury struggling, I cannot understand how the Shropshire Council can put up the cost of car parking in Shrewsbury, except to feather its own nest.

James Walton, assistant director for strategy and business support, stated that careful consideration had been given, and they had consulted residents. How many did they consult?

There are more than 1,000 small businesses in Shrewsbury all fighting to stay alive, and this rip-off council wants to kill our lovely town.

The reason charges have not gone up in the last couple of years is because the borough council realised the economic situation and wanted to safeguard local businesses.

Shropshire Council is ripping off little shops and the general public because they are a soft touch. It has taken from the town council everything that makes money and a profit, including the car parks in the town.

When the unitary council took over it had, if I remember correctly, £30 million and most assets from the borough council.

It also had £3 million towards the Flax Mill and another £1 million for land around the area.

This was ring-fenced, so where is it?

Let the officers and Martin Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for strategic transportation, come out and explain to everyone how they can justify car parking charges at the level they are about to charge.

Please let us have more talks before you put up the charges.

not the general public as far as i’m concerned,I now shop in Telford.Don’t expect a response from the council until Shrewsbury is full of charity shops and revenue is dropping.Shrewsburys economy not only depends on local shoppers but tourism,if a day out in the town becomes prohibitive the knock on effect hurts everyone, not just the loop!

And not a word from the MP Daniel Kawczynski who usually jumps on all other bandwagons, but then again he would be going against a Tory run Council so we can expect him to remain silent.

I already only shop at out of town sites and online to avoid unneccessary carparking charges… it might be a principle thing that ends up costing me more in fuel… but im sure the council wont worry…. they can claim it all back in expenses!!

as a town councillor Mr Farmer will surely know that we have a very serious and dangerous car pollution problem in “our lovely town “. It’s not the parking charges that will kill the town’s businesses, it’s the fumes that will kill the people first. He should be showing some responsibility, leadership and maturity by championing the Park and Ride, cycling, walking and public transport, not prioritising the interests of the businesses. With the chronic congestion in the town there seems to be no shortage of people willing to pay the parking charges anyway.

The only thing a large council like Shropshire County Council cares about is the existence of itself, Shropshire County Council.

Pedestrianise the whole place. Full of traffic, noise, dirt, charity shops, closed shops, stuck-up residents. I hardly ever go up town these days. For me, it’s the internet or Meole Brace. Why? Because it’s cheaper and I selfishly opt to look after myself rather than people who choose to run small businesses in town then complain that they’re not making much money out of it.

The river loop is nothing more than a living museum. Embrace this and move the shops out and ban all cars from the loop.

the reason they are putting up charges is because the are incompetent they have too much management and staff costs and expect us to pay for it, no way i say, the council should live within its means no more PFI, no more non jobs, no more fat cat pensions and no more senior directors telling us how much to pay for our own car parks
