Talks on Tesco proposal off

The Tesco Extra supermarket in Shrewsbury
A meeting to decide the fate of controversial plans by Tesco to stock more non-grocery goods at its Shrewsbury store was today called off at the 11th hour – the supermarket giant pulled its application amid claims it got its figures wrong.
A retrospective planning application was due to be heard by Shropshire Council this afternoon, but it has now been put back after Tesco said it needed more time to counter claims made by the Campaign to Protect Rural England group.
The firm wants to stock an extra 152 sq metres more of goods including clothing, DIY and recreational items at its Extra store in Harlescott, after it broke planning rules restricting non-grocery space.
But Andy Boddington, vice-chairman of the CPRE, said: “We welcome this deferral. We looked at the Tesco application and looked at how the store floorspace is used, but they did not seem to agree. By our reckoning Tesco have exceeded the allowed space for comparison goods by 587sqm (41 per cent), not the 152sq metres (11 per cent) claimed in their planning permission.”
But Tony Fletcher, spokesman for Tesco, said: “We don’t know how they (CPRE) have collated it but we obviously refute it completely.”

What they should do is get them to close the store until they get their facts right. Just show what tesco feel towards the planning laws, the just ride rough shot over it, then worry about it later. about time people make a stand against this type of practise.
