A major hunt was under way today for a wanted man police believe could be in Shropshire.

The public was today warned not to approach James “Jimmy” Stevens, who is wanted for breach of his prison licence.

The 52-year-old, who is from Bridgnorth, was jailed for eight years in 2004 for attempted armed robbery after he brandished a sawn-off shotgun in Madeley Stores but was released from jail in January.

Police said Stevens, who also has connections with Bridgnorth, had breached a condition of his licence requiring him to live in Worcester.

But they said there was no reason to suspect Stevens had a gun or access to one.

Detective Inspector Jim Fox, of South Worcestershire Police, said: “James Stevens is wanted by police and we would ask anyone who knows of his whereabouts to contact us urgently.

“He could be in the Worcester area but has strong connections with the Telford and Bridgnorth areas.

“We would like to stress that anyone who sees Stevens is asked not to approach him but to call police immediately. Stevens is of an average build and 5ft 7in tall. He has short brown hair and blue eyes.”

Richard Bull, West Mercia Police spokesman, said they had been looking for Stevens for about a week.

He said efforts were being made to find Stevens and they were working closely with their colleagues in Shropshire.

Shrewsbury Crown Court had heard in 2004 how Stevens, a crack cocaine addict, had pointed the gun at the shopkeeper before running off when he was threatened with a fire extinguisher.
