Organisers of this summer’s Shrewsbury Quarry concerts say they are confident there will be no repeat of complaints that the shows are “too quiet”.

Over the last two years, audiences have criticised the volume at shows featuring the likes of Travis.

Even the acts were unhappy with Shropshire T’Pau singer Carol Decker last year calling the approved sound level “really annoying”.

Would-be concert-goers have already posted comments on shropshirestar.com to demand that noise restrictions are eased ahead this year’s events on July 9 and 10.

The first concert will be a Back to the 80s event featuring Tony Hadley, Rick Astley, Go West and ABC, with more acts to be confirmed.

But one website visitor said: “Those lucky enough to be right by the stage might actually hear the music. Everyone else – take a good book.”

Chris Bailey, event manager for organisers IML Concerts, said there had been several months of meetings with Shrewsbury Town Council.

“We are confident that following discussions with the council the sound level will be appropriate this year,” he said. “An amicable solution has been reached.”

Mr Bailey said town businesses or residents would not be disturbed.

He also promised that the Saturday night concert would be “very different”, and the final line-up was being finalised.

He added: “We have a number of irons in the fire. We have not yet confirmed the artist, but it will be an artist very different to the 80s show.

“IML continually searches for a balance of acts for our outdoor shows around the UK but cannot just contract anyone we wish. Not all bands want to perform outdoors, some are contracted to the indoor arena circuit, some are recording new albums or overseas and not available for summer gigs.”

Tickets for the show will be priced at £32.50 per person and IML says it has further Friday night artists to announce so the final line-up will be more than the four so far announced.

firstly drop the price of the tickets, and
secondly the sound levels do need to be kerbed.
last year it was awful and residents should not have to put up with it, what a complete disgrace and a burden on the town afterwards.
why don’t they use the west mid show ground away from town, much easier?

Betty said: “secondly the sound levels do need to be kerbed.”

by kerbed do you mean reduced? Sorry to disappoint you Betty but the complaints were that the music was too quiet. So if anything the volume will be turned up.

Memo to town residents who will undoubtably be up in arms-

    1) these kind of events are few and far between so perhaps you should exercise a bit of tolerance
    2) you’ve had plenty of notice that these events are taking place so why not close you windows or pop out for the day rather than sitting home alone making yourselves all cross and writing complaint letters. Seriously, life is too short, it’s a big wide world out there, perhaps getting a life might be in order.
    3) other people exist outside of your little town centre clique who want these events to take place. We all pay our council tax and have an ‘SY’ postcode. If you don’t like noise perhaps a busy town centre was not the best choice of habitat for you.

In conclusion – chill out please!

they need to be quieter for sure, and as for plenty of notice well to be fair its not really been advertised yet apart from the shropshire star reporting it. so plenty of noticed i don’t think so.
as for getting a life, well mines great and so is most peoples in this town.

Whisper it quietly but Shrewsbury is becoming quite a cool place to live. If you’d asked three years ago whether acts like Travis, Jool Holland, Michael Mcintyre and Billy Bragg would be playing in our town then people would have laughed. Don’t let the nay sayers and doom mongers get you down!

More than a few years ago I used to play in a local band called Aphrodiziac. As part of the May Day celebrations we were asked to play in the band stand. Ten minutes in we had to stop due to complaints from the residents of Kingsland. We only had small 100 watt amps in those days and the slightest breeze at 50 ft would have meant you heard nothing at all. The problem here is not that of noise pollution but of pure snobbery. I can bet my bottom dollar that should the Halle or the Royal Philharmonic wish to belt out a few tunes into the early hours at 110db then no-one would bat an eyelid. It might also be worth reminding these few complainants who have been curtiously invited and forewarned of the event. That as a point of fact It is contemporary musicians such as myself who financially subsidise the elite clique of the aural arts and if we didn’t, then there would be no classical concerts or theatres for them to attend.

Betty – Seeing as the event is 4 months away and you know about it, i think that is fair warning.

I completely agree with the comment that if you wanted a life which is quiet all the time, then you shouldnt live in a town centre.

Also, what burden did the town suffer afterwards?

Betty – ok, perhaps you have a life but I notice you didn’t have a problem being labelled intolerant.

Have you any idea how the residents of the town centre are viewed by the rest of Shrewsbury? All you have to do is read comments on websites such as this to gather that they are seen as small minded, petty, insular & scared of change. A few hours of music on a handful of evenings – is this really worth moaning about? There are a lot worse things happening in the world, earthquakes, wars, famine, etc. Let’s get a little perspective shall we.

Betty, the problem here is the sound is much to quiet and not enough music is put on for young people in Shrewsbury. The town residents complain when they have no place too. If you don’t like noise, crowds or events in the quarry you really have to move somewhere quiet.

I love the way town centre residents always claim to have shrewsburys interests at heart. What could be better for the town than an cash injection into the town whilst at the same time raising it’s profile? I’m not trying to tar all residents with the same brush because I’m sure they all don’t feel the same way, but your spokespeople are making you look like a bunch of selfish, small minded killjoys!

And as for the residents JUST CHILL OUT OR GO OUT!!!!!!! SORRY Betty!!!!
I agree Kelly 4 months notice is more than enough.
