Hospital staff on their bikes

Wednesday 10th March 2010, 6:32AM GMT.

People are being invited to get on their bikes and help promote new cycling spaces being unveiled at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital next week.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is working with Cycle Shrewsbury to make it easier and more convenient for people to cycle to the hospital.

Next Tuesday, trust chairman Dr John Davies will officially open 100 cycle parking spaces at 12 locations on the site.

The ceremony will be attended by Shropshire Council leader Keith Barrow.

Adrian Osborne, the trust’s head of communications and business development, said: “We already have a number of staff who cycle and hope that with these new initiatives many more staff, as well as visitors to the site, will be encouraged to join in.”

Councillor Barrow added: “Many people make short journeys to work, to school or to the shops, and the aim of Cycle Shrewsbury is to show that it is often quicker and more convenient, as well as cheaper, to make some of these journeys by bike.

“I will be cycling to RSH on a Shropshire Council pool bike which are well-used by our staff to get to meetings around town.”

Visitors to the hospital on Tuesday will also be able to have their bike checked for free by Dr Bike, the Cycle Shrewsbury mechanic. He will be outside the ward block from noon until 4pm. Police will also be attending to security mark bicycles.
